A series of ten programmes presenting the history and development of the firearm. 4: Riflemen Form
Introduced by Christopher Roads
Military men did not look on the rifle with much favour in the 18th and early 19th centuries: they preferred the smooth-bore musket. The Kentucky rifle was one of the first rifles to be employed in warfare, in the American War of Independence, but not by regular soldiers. With the arrival of a French design called the Minie", the rifle was finally adopted by the British army as the standard arm of the regular soldier - and proved its worth against the Russians in the Crimean War.

Robin Ray introduces
Turangaltla Andre Previn , tonight's conductor, describes the Turangalila-Symphony by OLIVIER MESSIAEN as ' with The Rite of Spring, the most important orchestral work of our times.'
This vast hymn to love in all its forms is written for a huge orchestra with an enormous array of percussion. Glittering cascades of exotic sound alternate with great sweeping romantic tunes.
The performance is illustrated with Tantric and Kangara pictures from India, tribal masks and statues from Africa, and paintings from such artists as Marc Chagall , Odilon Redon , Gustave Moreau , Georgia O'Keeffe and Victor Vasarely. With the London Symphony Orchestra leader JOHN GEORGIADIS conducted by Andre Previn with Michel Beroff (piano) and Jeanne Loriod (ondes martenot)

Starring Mario Adorf, Tilo Pruckner
Bomber and Paganini are a pair of grossly incompetent burglars. Quarrelling as usual while opening a safe, they succeed only in blowing themselves up and wake up in hospital: Bomber blind and Paganini crippled. Disowned by their gang, the two are forced into each other's company for survival.
... sly, artful ... full of gay, subtle humour, many gags, bittersweet melancholy and biting irony ... (die WELT) ... a remarkably vital piece of film-making (TAGESZEITUNG) ... superlatively played by the duo Mario Adorf and Tilo Pruckner
(WEST-DEUTSCHE ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG)
