Overture and Act I
Candide is in love with Cunegonde, daughter of the house in Westphalia where he was brought up. But then he is expelled from home, separated from his beloved fiancee and forced to witness a series of disasters.

John Wells gives a talk on the 18th-century background to Voltaire's ideas.
Act II
Accompanied by his servant Cacambo, Candide continues his quest for Cunegonde in South America.
He finally comes to accept the real world and is reunited with his love.

Fela Kuti
Fela Anikupalo-Kuti is one of the most popular musicians to come out of Africa. Born in Nigeria in 1938, he has dominated the African musical scene since the early 1970s. Throughout his career he has used his music as a vehicle for social comment and political criticism, and has had to face assault, imprisonment and even exile for his views.
The concert was filmed on his last visit to the Glastonbury mid-summer festival with his 20-piece band Egypt 80.
