Since wolves became extinct Britain's deer have had no natural predators. Man controls the animals, culling the population to maintain healthy herds - and to provide venison. But a small number of deer are also sporting targets.
Hunters claim that their pursuit and killing of the stags and hinds is the surest and most humane way of controlling them. Critics see deer hunting as an act of barbarity.
