Gorillas in the Midst of Man
A mountain gorilla baby, just two hours old, is cradled gently in its mother's arms.
It will grow up in an intimate family group led by a huge silverback male. Its progress is watched carefully by a dedicated group of scientists and volunteers who are continuing the years of research undertaken by the late Dian Fossey. Mountain gorillas are among our closest relatives.
Sadly, their dwindling population now numbers less than 400, surviving in a tiny conservation area in central Africa.

Third of six programmes Tom Phillips
Tom Phillips , better known as a portrait painter and maker of strange books, reveals and performs his latest works. He gives an account of the birth of his ideas on art, imagination, memory, women and music. He has made a series of pictures called Curriculum
Vitae, about how the creative man starts to inhabit the growing boy. These he expands with a variety of moving images from lullaby to tombstone, via toys, the blitz, sexual awakening, the magic of language and the revelations of painting itself. Photography JOHN RECORD

Spanish Grand Prix
Built only four years ago, Jerez offers the best of facilities for the spectator, but the tight bends and short straights make the circuit very demanding on car and driver. Reliability wins races here, so expect to see the Championship front-runners leading the way yet again. Commentators:

Starring Matthew Modine as Birdy and Nicolas Cage as Al Columbato

Caged in a military mental hospital, a young man squats, withdrawn and silent.
Trying to revive him with reminiscences of their youth is his buddy, Al, a fellow casualty of Vietnam. He recalls the simpler times, before the traumas of war turned their adolescent dreams into adult nightmares - the times before Birdy took his ultimate flight of fantasy....
This powerful drama was made by Alan Parker, director of Midnight Express and features the stars of Full Metal Jacket and Moonstruck.
