Poetry, Pain and Pleasure The Seduction by Eileen McAuley , was the winning poem among over 73,000 entries to the 1986 Young

Education was an early casualty of the Second World War. Evacuation plans fragmented what little schooling there was and truancy and absenteeism were rife. But even in those dark days there was scope for experiment, and in the summer of 1940, a group of Birmingham schoolgirls were picked to go to boarding-school at Pipewood in Staffordshire. It was an educational experience none would forget, and at the annual get-together, former pupils and staff relive their experiences at Pipewood. Producer David Nelson

London is slowly grinding to a halt - on that everyone seems to agree - but the right solution to the capital's transport congestion is fiercely debated.
The Department of Transport will soon announce a shortlist of major schemes to tackle the problem and this marks the beginning of one of the most crucial periods of planning in the region's history.
Terry Dignan looks at Government policy and reports on the growing number of campaigners who believe that the time is right for drastic action - to produce a new vision of transport for the south east.

In Search of the Spirit of a Storyteller
This programme explores the life and work of Jamaican painter, sculptor and author, Namba Roy as seen through the eyes of his son, Tamba. Namba Roy , descendent of slaves brought to Jamaica from the Congo, spent much of his life in the Maroon village of Accompong in the cockpit country (a refuge where escaped Jamaican slaves, known as Maroons, lived as free men). He learnt much of his art from his grandfather, who instilled in him the folklore of Africa.
Namba died in 1961, when his son was only two years old. Now Tamba Roy returns to
Jamaica, to the village where his father lived, to the people who knew him.
This is Tamba Roy 's personal odyssey in search of the spirit of a storyteller.

A celebration of the new sounds of a continent.
'When we feel we're about to stifle, we put on a Khaled cassette, so we can breathe.' 3: Algeria
Rai, the unofficial music of Algeria's youth, is the explosive music of young men and women torn between the age-old traditions and restrictions of an Islamic society and the attractions of the modern world. Oran, Algeria's most westernised city, is the birthplace and capital of modern Rai, a music which combines clay drums with synthesisers and draws on Bedouin, Spanish, rock and black American influences.
Rai's new lyrics speak of Algeria's unspeakable - alcohol, sex, unemployment, and housing shortages, and the music provides an outlet for a generation whose sense of frustration has reflected in the major riots which swept through the country almost exactly a year ago. With Cheb Khaled, Cheb
Mami, Chaba Fadela , Cheb Sahraoui, Cheb Tahar,
Cheb Abdelhak , Messaoud Bellemou and a host of traditional musicians.
