Spies, crashed airmen and fugitives from the Gestapo often relied on forged papers on the French Riviera during the war. For the British, like those in this documentary film, papers were essential to avoid arrest. The British were not supposed to be there after 1940. From Nice and Monaco to Clermont-Ferrand, this film traces the stories of five Britons who, by fate, choice or duty, spent the war years in southern France evading the authorities.

John Kiki ,
Painter John Kiki 's career has been shaped by circumstance. Born into a large
Greek-Cypriot family, Kiki's artistic talent was recognised early and encouraged against his parents' wishes. He won a scholarship to the Royal
Academy Schools, where he was given the accolade of his first one-man show. Family pressure soon forced him into a career as a restaurateur, but ten years later he went back to painting. His extraordinary talent was quickly realised:
Charles Saatchi bought a number of his paintings, which should have been a perfect launching pad back into the art world. However, outside forces once again intervened, this time with more serious consequences. Five years later, now in his mid-40s,
Kiki has taken up painting once again, and is determined to pursue the career which has twice previously eluded him. Film editor JONATHAN COOKE Director FRANCO ROSSO
