Uzbekistan in Central Asia is the 'cotton colony' of the Soviet Union. Seventy per cent of the total output of cotton is produced here. On a visit to a collective farm in the Fergana Valley meet one of the brigade leaders, Inyamin Rakhimov, and his family, at the height of the cotton harvest. The need to meet the targets set by the state planning agency, Gosplan, can lead to short cuts, like the use of lethal chemicals to defoliate the cotton plants. (e)

Eight country-by-country accounts of the origins of the Second World War written and narrated by Charles Wheeler. 6: Japan
Japan's attack on Pearl
Harbor, on 7 December 1941, was called 'a date which will live in infamy' by President Roosevelt. But desperate for living space and raw materials, Japan copied the west and sought an empire of her own in Asia.
When the United States cut off oil supplies, Japan was forced to act.
Drawing on rare film from the period and interviews with the men who fought in Japan's bloody battle for empire in the Far East,
Charles Wheeler tells the story of Japan's road to war.
