4: Gamblers of the Vale
A few square miles of not always very good land along the Avon is one of the most intensively cultivated parts of Britain. The Vale of Evesham in Worcestershire, grows a greater variety of fruit and vegetables than anywhere in England and sends them all over the country. The growers are gamblers, using muck, luck, science and hard work to survive in the chancy world of horticulture. This film looks at some of them during the first week of October last year. Tracks on the Oregon Trail
In the 1840s covered wagons carried 30,000 Americans west to find a ' better life '. They found it in Oregon, in the beautiful and fertile valleys of the Pacific north west. They learnt to care for their new paradise and passed on that concern to sons and grandsons.
In the 1970s a new trail has been blazed in Oregon; legislation makes it the most environmentally protected spot in the western world. Modern Oregon was first to clean-up its polluted rivers; first to introduce a 55 mph speed limit; first to require refunds not only on bottles, but on cans too; first to ban the rip-off can cap; first to give fare-free rides on city buses; first to ban poisonous herbicides. Horizon visits the state that's become the symbol for a new America. Could it be a blueprint for the rest of us? Or will the pioneers' paradise give way to the pressures of the 1980s? No visitor to London, be he from abroad, from the provinces, or from the suburbs, fails to make at least one pilgrimage to that village a few yards to the north of Piccadilly Circus, called ' Soho '.
This is a filmed impression of the glamour, glitter and downright sleaziness of London's most famous square mile at its most beguiling hour.
