Southall on Trial
'On Monday 23 April 1979 the National Front held an election meeting in Southall Town Hall. Over 5,000 police were deployed in the area, many local residents sustained severe injuries, Blair Peach died and 342 people were charged.
'In this programme we show how the local community, predominantly black, responded to these events. As the trials of the 342 continue in Barnet courts, the programme aims to show that not only Southall but the whole of the black community living in Britain is on trial for asserting and defending its right to live in this country peaceably, free. from the fear of racist. intimidation.'

Renoir's comic genius runs riot in this account of a drop-out who beats society's efforts to rehabilitate him by creating a protective cocoon of chaos wherever he goes. When M Lestingois, a kindly bookseller, dives into the Seine to save the life of a miserable tramp, he thereby plunges his household into a frightening new world of anarchy and anti-social behaviour. Boudu, the tramp, is a most unlovable character and he has no intention of leaving his benefactor's home.

A programme of Russian songs with Galina Vishnevskaya (soprano) and Mstislav Rostropovich (piano)
GALINA VISHNEVSKAYA , formerly the leading soprano at the Bolshoi Opera, has sung at the world's leading opera houses.
ROSTROPOVICH is known as one of the finest cellists in the world' and also as a conductor. But tonight he is heard in yet another role, as his wife's accompanist on the piano.
Both Rostropovich and his wife were born in Russia but in 1978 they were deprived of their Soviet citizenship and forbidden to return to their native land. Many of the songs they have chosen for this programme are about lost love and the music has a tender melancholy which surely reflects the performers' sadness at being separated from their homeland and its people. The songs are sung in Russian and English. Translations by JILL BURROWS and ANDREW DALE will be spoken by Judi Dench and Michael Williams. The composers are GLINKA, TCHAIKOVSKY,
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, PROKOFIEV and RACHMANINOV.
The programme is introduced by HUMPHREY BURTON and was recorded at St John's, Smith Square, Westminster.

The Unipart World Team Matchplay The Final
Before the tournament began England were expected to play Wales, but over the last few years other countries have closed the gap, and the outcome of the week's matches and the £5,000 first prize is not so easily predicted.
One thing is certain, tonights final will be played in front of a tense and excitable crowd, who will eventually be applauding the first-ever World Team Matchplay champions.
