Peter Seabrook visits Hall Place at Leigh near Tonbridge, the home of Lord Hollenden. The house and gardens were built over 100 years ago and mature specimen trees are one of the major features. The great variety of rhododendrons make a colourful background to the lawns and the lake. y which provides a peaceful home for the wild-fowl.

Marcello's life is spent trying to sublimate a childhood crime by behaving as conventionally as possible. A civil servant, engaged to a middle-class girl of limited intelligence, he even volunteers as a Fascist spy in his effort to conform. But this attempt to identify with the ruling class casts Marcello even farther from the society he seeks to support.
