Over the next three days Jeremy James takes a critical look at the British way of sport. 1: Football
It's the game we invented; the game we beat the world at in 1966; and our league is still called the ' best in the world'. Yet since 1966 England have failed at international level to win crucial qualifying games. By contrast, West Germany have hardly been out of the World Cup finals since the war. Behind the scenes at Ipswich and FC Cologne, talking with top managers and players, some of the reasons why become clearer. Producer DAVID FILKIN

starring
Jean-Louis Trintlgnant Stefania Sandrelli
One of the best foreign films shown on BBC2 in the last three years.
Bertolucci's film, set in Fascist Italy before the war, is a graphic picture of a man tortured by sexual and political pressure.
Marcello's life is spent trying to sublimate a childhood crime by behaving as conventionally as possible. A civil servant, engaged to a middle-class girl of limited intelligence, he even volunteers as a Fascist spy in his effort to conform. But this attempt to identify with the ruling class casts Marcello even farther from the society he seeks to support.
