The geometry of the Elizabethan knot garden, with its patterns of paths and box-hedges in coloured gravel, was designed to give a year-round visual effect, but in this case there was also another reason. The less formal design of Chapman's Garden makes use of the colour of flowers and shrubs as a background to the water garden. Peter talks to PHILIP SWINDELLS about water plants and I BOB HOPKINS about bedding plants.

The threat of the mummy's curse failed to deter the scholars in Manchester who unwrapped Mummy No 1770 -the first ancient Egyptian mummy to be scientifically investigated in this country since the turn of the century. But what, exactly is a mummy? Why did the ancient Egyptians preserve their dead in this way? And why was the Manchester mummy buried with gold nipples and a false phallus?
Chronicle records how modern science can tell us much that is new about ancient Egyptian society and shows how the 2,000-year-old mummy was brought back to life.

One of the best foreign films shown on BBC2 in the last three years.
Maurice Pialat 's film about a woman dying of cancer, and the effect this has on those closest to her, treats a difficult subject with a directness that eliminates anguish and sentiment. Equally direct is his treatment of the sexual relationship of the young couple concerned. Philippe is an average young man: he has problems at work, he doesn't really understand his wife although he loves her and life seems to have nothing special in store for him. Then he learns that his mother is ill and the hospital will not keep her ' since there is nothing we can do for her and we need the bed.' The presence of the dying woman at home changes the whole family relationship.
