Tonight Jeremy James takes the second of three critical looks at the British way of sport - revealing some disturbing similarities in three different fields. 2: Athletics
It was not so long ago that Britain expected to win scores of medals at the Olympic Games but, at next year's games in Moscow, the question is not how many medals will we win but will we win any? Athletes throughout the world may be amateur-at least technically - but in some other countries the preparation of winners is now a profession. The East Germans, in particular, are leaving us increasingly further behind in facilities, resources, science, medicine and long-term national plans. TESSA SANDERSON, SEBASTIAN COE and DALEY THOMPSON are three of only a handful of British athletes who might win medals in Moscow -and if they do, as they, their coaches and administrators admit tonight, it will be in spite of rather than because of any help they have been given through the British system.
