Thaipusam - Festival of Ecstasy Narrated by ROBERT CUSHMAN
KURUP and his followers worship Siva the destroyer, most terrible of Hindu gods. For eight days they pray, fast and dance themselves into trance.
Kurup is a lorry-driver in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is also a guru, the spiritual leader of a group preparing for the highlight of their year - Thaipusam.
In an ecstatic trance they offer their bodies for sacrifice. Claiming to feel no pain, they thrust snears through each other's tongues and cheeks. Men parade as 'peacocks' carrying a heavy frame of metal and feathers anchored in their flesh.
