The Wild-Catters
A third of America's oil is produced, not by the big oil companies, but by the ' Wild-Catters ' -the 10,000 independent oil men who do most of the prospecting. Many of them have an oil well in their back garden - producing less than a barrel a day. The Wild-Catters regard themselves as ' the last frontiersmen ' of America. From Texas and Oklahoma JOHN SWINFIELD reports.
