Triumph and Tragedy Rudolph Dunbar was a remarkable black man of his time - a classical clarinetist, war correspondent and symphony conductor. Born in British Guyana in 1907, Dunbar leapt into the spotlight in 1942 when he made his conducting debut with the London
Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. It was the start of an international career which saw him conduct major orchestras all over the world during the 40s and 50s. But in England, where he lived and worked for much of his life, he was never truly successful again, and died a bitter and impoverished man. In his unfinished autobiography he claims that there were powerful elements within the English music establishment working against him. This film takes the title of that book, Triumph and Tragedy, and describes the life of this talented but ultimately frustrated musician. Director MILTON BRYAN

A celebration of the new sounds of a continent.
'Most people see my country as a place of famine and civil war. But there is another, more enduring side. We are a people with a long history.' Thus singer Aster Aweke introduces the second film in this series. Neither quite African nor Arabic, the contemporary sounds of Ethiopia draw their inspiration from powerful and ancient sources - the mesmeric singing of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church; the subtle and elliptical quality of amharic poetry; and the quick-witted satire of Ethiopia's troubadours, the Azmaris. Ethiopia has been described as being in Africa, but not of it. Eight thousand feet up on its highland plateau, never successfully colonised, it tenaciously holds to its own ways.
Although weary and scarred by the events of recent years, this spirit persists in the unique and haunting beauty of its music.

A season of films made by the German director in Hollywood. Western Union starring
The year is 1861 and Western Union are constructing what is to be the first transcontinental telegraph system in the US. Opposition to the project comes not only from Sioux
Indians but also from a group of renegade Southerners. This Zane Grey story, a strictly traditional Western, was, unexpectedly, directed by Lang, and is notable for its dramatic use of landscape.
