Education was an early casualty of the Second World War. Evacuation plans fragmented what little schooling there was and truancy and absenteeism were rife. But even in those dark days there was scope for experiment, and in the summer of 1940, a group of Birmingham schoolgirls were picked to go to boarding-school at Pipewood in Staffordshire.
