A 13-part worldwide series exploring Man's religious quest. Presented by Ronald Eyre

'There are times when you want the answers given to you. You think "If the Pope walked in at the front door and gave me the answer, that's marvellous." But that is a very immature concept of religion.'

We visit a triangle of places in Europe: Rome for Mass in St Peter's celebrated by the Pope; Leeds to meet an English Catholic family and a factory worker, and Spain to see the great Abbey of Montserrat and to meet the Little Brothers of Jesus, a small but world-wide monastic order dedicated to living the obscure working life that Jesus lived in Nazareth. Their novice house is in a remote and barren part of central Spain, a desert.

'The desert is a space in your head. It's something you carry around with you. It's the hard place where you meet yourself and where you go searching for God.'

(The Long Search Continues, Radio 3, Thursday. A book about the two series will be published shortly)
