Robin Ray introduces
Turangaltla Andre Previn , tonight's conductor, describes the Turangalila-Symphony by OLIVIER MESSIAEN as ' with The Rite of Spring, the most important orchestral work of our times.'
This vast hymn to love in all its forms is written for a huge orchestra with an enormous array of percussion. Glittering cascades of exotic sound alternate with great sweeping romantic tunes.
The performance is illustrated with Tantric and Kangara pictures from India, tribal masks and statues from Africa, and paintings from such artists as Marc Chagall , Odilon Redon , Gustave Moreau , Georgia O'Keeffe and Victor Vasarely. With the London Symphony Orchestra leader JOHN GEORGIADIS conducted by Andre Previn with Michel Beroff (piano) and Jeanne Loriod (ondes martenot)
