A Grapevine report
On 2 September police and the DHSS mounted their biggest operation against social security fraud: 172 people were charged at special magistrates' courts, 114 others were also caught up in the police net at a bogus DHSS office in Oxford and held for some hours before release. Solicitors and probation officers were not informed, though the press were. These professionals and the Claimants' Union are questioning the social and legal implications of this apparently successful ' Operation Major'.

1 I don't see him at all as the champion of the Common Man he's sometimes cracked up to be.'
(LORD GIFFORD)
' One of the greatest Common Lawyers who's ever lived.'
(LORD SCARMAN)
Lord Denning has attracted more public notice and more criticism than any other British judge in our times. For 20 years as Master of the Rolls he presided over the Court of Appeal. His judgments on civil cases have had far-reaching importance for the law and the rights of the individual. His admirers proclaim him as the champion of the Common Man against the might of government, corporations and trade unions. His critics say he was too political, too idiosyncratic and trod where judges should not.
Lord Denning's retirement earlier this week is the occasion of a first assessment of his notable career. He talks to David Jessel about some of his controversial rulings, on his view of justice, and on some of the formative influences on his life.

The Martha Graham Dance Company in this powerful dance drama - the first full-length classic in the modern dance repertoire.
Graham's version of the story is an intensely personal reworking of the legend, seen through the mind of Clytemnestra. The time is shortly after her death at the hands of her son, Orestes, in revenge for the murder of his father, Agamemnon: she looks back on the tragic events of her life as she waits for the gods to judge her. Four programmes about the pioneering days of television outside broadcasts, narrated by John Craven
' They were all " firsts "... and there was always the excitement: would things go right, would they go wrong? That was the essence of live television.' (PETER DIMMOCK) 1: Saturday Night Out
Nowadays most television programmes are pre-recorded - a refined and sophisticated package. But in the mid-50s, with television reaching most of the country and more and more people buying sets, live outside broadcasts commanded large and enthusiastic audiences.
Tonight's programme tells the story of one kind of outside broadcast that brought viewers excitement and adventure-live, as it happened.
With extracts from recordings made at the time of television 'firsts', including the first live transmission from a helicopter in flight and from a submarine submerged - and with the testimony of the producers, cameramen, engineers and commentators.
