Hitchcock: Rebecca

on BBC Two England

Starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine
with George Sanders, Judith Anderson

A shy and unsophisticated lady's companion marries wealthy widower Maxim de Winter. At Manderley, the family estate in Cornwall, the new Mrs de Winter finds she is haunted by the spirit of her husband's first wife, Rebecca, who died in mysterious circumstances. Her difficulties in adjusting to her new position are compounded by the hostility of housekeeper - Mrs Danvers.
Hitchcock's first Hollywood film was an instant box-office success throughout the world and won the Academy Award as the best film of 1940 - the only Hitchcock film to be so honoured.
