A Grapevine report
On 2 September police and the DHSS mounted their biggest operation against social security fraud: 172 people were charged at special magistrates' courts, 114 others were also caught up in the police net at a bogus DHSS office in Oxford and held for some hours before release. Solicitors and probation officers were not informed, though the press were. These professionals and the Claimants' Union are questioning the social and legal implications of this apparently successful ' Operation Major'.
