The Solent
Introduced by Clare Francis
This morning, if the i weather has been kind, the hull of the Mary Rose will be lifted from the mud of The Solent. Under the eyes of HRH The Prince of Wales the crane of the Tog Mor, one of the largest lifting barges in the world, will winch the Tudor warship delicately to the surface, to end a 15-year operation which has captured the imagination of the nation. Throughout the day Chronicle cameras will convey the excitement and tension. Clare Francis sets the scene for the concentrated activity which is scheduled to last until late afternoon. At sea John Selwyn Gilbert reports on activity underwater and from an exclusive position on the diving control vessel Sleipner. Bruce Parker reports from the lifting crane itself.
