The Miracle of Life
All of us are here because of a commonplace, and yet quite extraordinary, event-the coming together of a human egg and sperm to create a new human being. Yet until recently, that process had never been seen in all its extraordinary detail. This film reveals what goes on inside the human body, as it traces the events that lead to conception and birth. Later this evening BBC2 and Radio 3 begin a ten-part serialised version of Richard Wagner 's epic cycle of music dramas,
The Ring of the Nibelung.
Each act will be preceded by a brief essay written and narrated by Humphrey Burton and featuring Frederick Jaeger speaking Wagner's words.
The first programme provides some essential background to Wagner's grand and stirring vision of the world. It includes a flying visit to Wagner's Festival Theatre at Bayreuth, and a guide to the gods, dwarfs, heroes and giants of the sagas from which Wagner derived his inspiration.

An aircraft mysteriously crash-lands on a deserted island. Its passengers are 40 English schoolboys being evacuated from an impending nuclear war. At first the boys. finding themselves totally isolated, attempt to maintain a ' Civilised society. Gradually fear and loneliness take hold and warring factions spring up, most especially between Ralph, the elected leader, and Jack, his arch rival.
William Golding 's modern classic has been vividly transferred to the screen in a powerful, even horrifying, parable of man's inherently dual nature. It remains one of the most original British films of the 60s. Shot on location on a Puerto Rican island, it uses a non-professional cast of English schoolboys.
