The scene is Hunding's dwelling place. After the power-struggle of The Rhinegold the action has moved on a generation and shifted from Valhalla to the human world, in which Wotan's presence is heard (in the orchestra) but not seen. The prevailing mood has changed from violence to love, though with an ominous threat ever in the background. fhis act contains some of Wagner's most vivid and passionate music, depicting the star-crossed love of the lonely outcast Siegmund for Sieglinde, the oppressed and emotion-starved wife of Hunding.
