A natural-history drama in six parts about our understanding of animals and their habits.

A cony that builds haystacks, a spider that steals flies from the webs of others, and stags that wear 'wigs' to impress their rivals - a few of the marvels revealed by modern zoologists.

In the Middle Ages quite different kinds of people moulded attitudes about wild creatures. While monastic scholars fostered the belief in beasts with mysterious habits, Frederick II sought the amazing 'goose tree'.

Act
The second episode in the Bayreuth production of The Ring of the Nibelung by RICHARD WAGNER , in ten weekly parts.
BAYREUTH FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA conductor Pierre Boulez
The scene is Hunding's dwelling place. After the power-struggle of The Rhinegold the action has moved on a generation and shifted from Valhalla to the human world, in which Wotan's presence is heard (in the orchestra) but not seen. The prevailing mood has changed from violence to love, though with an ominous threat ever in the background. fhis act contains some of Wagner's most vivid and passionate music, depicting the star-crossed love of the lonely outcast Siegmund for Sieglinde, the oppressed and emotion-starved wife of Hunding.
Production PATRICE chereau Design RICHARD PEDUZZI
Costumes JACQUES SCHMIDT
Artistic supervision Wolfgang WAGNER
Sung in German, with English subtitles by PETER BUTLER , who also produced The World of the Ring
A co-production of unitel, BAVARIAN TELEvision and the BAYREUTH FESTIVAL Television director BRIAN LARGE
For the best effect, viewers with stereo R3 should turn off tv sound and position their speakers on either side of the screen, but a few feet away. Stereo headphones provide a suitable alternative
