In 1831 Charles Darwin was among the crew of HMS Beagle that sailed for South America. In the five years of the Beagle's voyage Darwin's studies of flora and fauna convinced him that the earth and the life on it change constantly and his findings formed the basis for his theory of evolution that absorbed him for most of his life and finally resulted in the publication of Origin of Species - one of the most controversial books in history.
Nicholas Clay plays Charles Dar win in this lavish film of the life and work of a remarkable and radical thinker.

A posthumous child, born six months after the death of his own father, Brian Tyler is now father figure to 1,000 pupils. As Kingswood's Head he is teacher, administrator, counsellor and ultimate arbiter of its style and standards.
A staunch defender of the comprehensive system in general and Kingswood in particular, BRIAN TYLER is observed as he copes with the daily chores of school life. At the same time the film examines his attitude to children in a school with no uniform, discipline in a school with no corporal punishment and private education in a school that is geographically squeezed between two of England's famous public schools, Oundle and Uppingham.

Before being arrested for murder, Ben Harper is able to tell his two children where he has hidden a large sum of stolen money. The children are sworn to secrecy, but they soon find themselves terrorised by the frightening figure of Ben's ex-cell mate Harry Powell -a psychopathic preacher, brilliantly portrayed by Robert Mitchum.
This was Laughton's only film as director: an unusual and haunting story of the confrontation between good and evil, it is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of American cinema.
