If bushes are beaten in winter would hibernating birds fly out? Could a mother hen fostering ducklings prevent them taking to water? Can birdsong be written as music? Were the wolves of Versailles more intelligent than the red deer they chased after?
The first steps towards answering such puzzles came from naturalists whose view of the world was inspired by the Bible.

John Ray, a 17th-century parson sought to describe and catalogue the 'treasures of the creation' from fenland marsh to the clamorous seabird colonies of the Fame Islands. The Rev Gilbert White celebrated his God in discovering new animals and habits within the parish of Selbourne. And the eccentric 'Squire' Waterton explored the jungles of South America and enquired whether God had 'bungled' the design of the sloth!

Violence and despair are at the heart of this act. Wotan s plan to use his son Siegmund to win back the ring for him independently is thwarted - after a searing dispute - by his wife Fricka, the goddess of marriage. Wotan concedes that Siegmund must be punished for stealing a woman from her husband and so his earlier orders to Brunnhilde, the Valkyrie, are reversed and the war-maiden is despatched to prepare Siegmund for a hero's after-life in Valhalla.
