Merchants not Makers
Why make things if it is easier and more profitable to buy and sell? Many small companies, some in the same family for generations, are moving from manufacturing to warehousing or to import/export businesses.

The Rhine's Revenge
The Rhine is one of the major commercial arteries of Europe. Since the middle of the last century, when the navigational problems on its upper stretch were ironed out, boats have been able to travel its entire length bearing cargo right to the heart of Europe. But as man improves the water-way, the Rhine gets its own back. Land on both sides has been wrecked, either by swamping or by being dried out. The river bed is constantly eroded to the extent that every new dam necessitates another new one downstream. Worst of all, the towns of Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Karlsruhe are in danger of total inundation.
This is the story of how a river has defended itself against progress.

with Robert Robinson Tea with Miss Pym
Earlier this year, many distinguished writers and critics were asked to name a writer whose work they consider under-rated. The books of Barbara Pym were nominated by PHILIP LARKIN - ' She has a unique eye and ear for the small poignancies and comedies of everyday life,' - and by LORD DAVID CECIL -' The finest examples of high comedy to have appeared in England during the past 75 years.'
In this programme, Miss Pym talks about her writing, her life and her new book Quartet in Autumn, and entertains Lord David Cecil to tea in her cottage in Oxfordshire.
