A series of eight programmes
Pennies in wishing wells; wells dressed with flowers; stone heads set in factory chimneys and, throughout rural England, strange ceremonies ritually performed. All these are the colourful remnants of a mysterious religion which dominated Western Europe before the influence of the Christian Church and which, in one place, still survives. In the High Peak District of Derbyshire, a secret community still venerates the Earth Mother and the other forgotten gods of the Ancient Celts. Dr Anne Ross of Southampton University talks to a Guardian of this ancient community and shows how today's quaint ceremonies are pre-Christian and rooted in head worship and blood sacrifice.
