A fortnightly look at the big screen at home and abroad: news, views and interviews presented by Gavin Millar Eric Rohmer
Rohmer's Die Marquise von O...., winner of The Special Jury Prize at Cannes tnis year, has its UK premiere on BBC2 this Saturday. Arena: Cinema goes to Paris for a unique interview with this most retiring of film makers, who once turned up for the New York premiere of his own My Night with Maud in a false moustache for fear of being recognised.
Rohmer was one of the nucleus, with Godard, Chabrol, Truffaut and Rivette, who edited Cahiers du Cinema and who became the shock troops of the New Wave. His recent films, such as Claire's Knee and Love in the Afternoon, are witty, intelligent conversation-pieces about sex, which he calls his ' moral tales '.
' I dream of a Mf of first loves, lasting loves' (Frederique in Love in the Afternoon)
