Anthony Mayer , an experienced observer of the Indian scene, has travelled widely in India with Mrs Gandhi and recorded hours of conversation with her. This film throws new light on the enigmatic Indira Gandhi and conveys her view of the events of the last few months, also the years leading to them, as well as her justification of her declaration of a State of Emergency in India which has raised major questions about the fate of democratic government there and, indeed, throughout the Third World.
Mrs Gandhi , the Prime Minister, claims that overriding social and economic problems demand the restriction of civil freedom. She argues that the press and opposition politicians turned these freedoms into a licence for irresponsible action. But her own actions have focused a storm of controversy on India: an unknown number of people have been imprisoned, censorship of the press and other controls have been introduced, even the rule of law has been threatened. After years of allowing free access, India now inhibits the movement of foreign correspondents, reporters, writers and film-makers.
At the centre of it all-Mrs Gandhi, accused of dictatorship, convinced of her own rightness. This is her view of her country.
This is the first of an occasional series of programmes in which world leaders take a highly personal view of their own societies.
