The return of Mohsin Ali, a 19-year-old poet, to the village where he had led a band of freedom fighters during Bangladesh's war of liberation, marked the possibility of a new life for his community.
The older generation had been decimated, the economy shattered, but within a year the freedom fighters' army of 3,000 young people had already brought about much change.
This is the story of the Bengalis, of their new-found self-respect, and of their efforts to find a new beginning.
