The first powered flight, undertaken by the Wright Brothers' plane at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, and the Apollo 11 moon landing formed two remarkable days in the history of aviation: 17 December 1903 and 20 July 1969. At Richborough in Kent a ruined Roman fort contains an enormous concrete platform. For centuries its former purpose had remained a mystery to scholars and robbers, who dug deep inside searching for tombs and treasure. Recent research, however, carried out by Simon Thurley , the chief executive of English Heritage, has revealed that the platform was in fact the foundation for one of the most magnificent monuments of the Roman Empire - a discovery that sheds new light on the Roman invasion of AD 43.
