Pop magazine. Presented by Jamie Theakston and Jayne Middlemiss.
The fifth of a six-part magazine series made by and about disabled people. Tonight viewers speak about the portrayal of disabled people on television. They raise the issues of cliched triumph-over-tragedy news reports, dramatic roles in which characters only ever talk about their disability, and the coverage of the paralympics. Other items include a report from Hong Kong, blind performance poet Damon Rose and an unusual dance company called Nocandoco.

When war broke out in South East Asia in 1941, one tribe from the hills of Burma - the Christian, English-speaking Karen - distinguished itself in the fight against Japan. Karen fighters played a major part in halting the Japanese at the Indian-Burmese border. They taught British Army regulars to fight in the jungle, and worked with Force 136, the British sabotage unit immortalised in fiction in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. Fifty years later they are still fighting, but this time it is for their independence. Using newly unearthed archive material and documents, Timewatch tells why the Karen feel abandoned by the British and how, to this day, they are involved in a brutal civil war with the Burmese.
