The first of an eight-part natural history of North America.
When English colonists arrived on the shores of the "New World", they set about the God-given task to "subdue the earth and till the soil". They founded Jamestown on the great Bay of Chesapeake. Yet surrounded by the natural wealth of the most prolific estuary in North America, the English starved to death, Inland lay the "endless forest" - home to the Cherokee tribe who, like all the other native peoples of North America, had a very different view of wilderness and wildlife. Now their world would change. Narrated by Alan Ereira. Producers Peter Crawford, Steve Nicholls

Regarded as his greatest choral work, the piece took Brahms 11 years to complete and, of all his work, is uniquely bound up in his relationship with fellow composer Robert Schumann and, in particular, with Schumann's widow Clara.
With Barbara Bonney (soprano), Bryn Terfel (baritone), the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado, and the Swedish Radio Choir.
