The first of two films directed by Jiri Menzel
Starring Vaclav Neckar, Jitka Bendova, Vladimir Valenta

In occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II a young apprentice railway guard leads a quiet uneventful life in a small country station. Only the amorous exploits of the chief guard and his dreams of his own romantic conquests relieve his boredom.

In his first film as a director, Jiri Menzel displays the gentle humour and affection for his characters which distinguished that other Czech comic study of public servants, Milos Forman's The Firemen's Ball.
