Introduced by Melvyn Bragg The Nature oj Sound A portrait of Krzyszt Penderecki
Now 43, penderecki, who is one of the most highly acclaimed composers working in contemporary music, has achieved an international reputation. Rising on a wave of artistic excitement in Poland in the late 50s, he has achieved popularity not only with concert audiences, but also with a wider public who were able to hear his music used on the soundtrack of the film The Exorcist.
2nd House filmed Pendurecki in Poland and London, conducting complete orchestral performances of ' Polymorphia ', and of ' Jacob's Awakening'.
11 showed Penderecki's continuing poicer of conjuring up vivid pictorial images. Behind the calculation there is deep feeling, and his success in communicating this has made him the world figure that he is. (FELIX APRAHAMIAN. in the SUNDAY TIMES)
Penderecki is a practising Catholic living in a Communist country, but although religion figures largely in his works, at the heart of his music is an exploration of the nature of sound.
