'Rampage at the Carnival'... 'Battle at Notting Hill'... Headlines that told how everything had gone disastrously wrong. How did people who had worked for weeks making fantastic costumes and practising music for a carnival they hoped would be 'a little piece of heaven in the streets' suddenly find themselves caught in a battle between police and stone-throwing mobs? There are no simple answers, of course, but this film goes back to the beginning and follows the would-be revellers; the police; and the key men behind the carnival, as they make the plans that ended with bricks, truncheons and chaos.
'Carnival isn't just a chance to have a happy time, drink a lot of rum, fall down and forget. It's a time when our kids can identify with something that is ours.' As expressed by one of the organisers, that was the hope of Carnival 76. But it all went disastrously wrong. Summer of 76 tells the story of the Notting Hill' Carnival:' 10.15 pm
