In the late 1970s there's another economic crisis. The government looks around desperately for cuts in public spending to satisfy pressing foreign creditors. Lowering of the school leaving age is suggested. This documentary drama introduced by PETER JENKINS aims to show how the Whitehall and government machines work. At the end Jenkins talks to former senior civil servant SIR TOBY WEAVER and DOUGLAS HURD , mp, about the issues raised in the programme.

3: The Day the Sun Blowed Up
On 16 July 1945, at 5.30 in the morning, the world's first atom bomb was experimentally exploded in the desert of New Mexico. This is the story of the fateful days of secret preparation for the test. It is told by some of the scientists and soldiers who were intimately concerned and is illustrated by previously unseen colour film. The story is also told by some of the local inhabitants for whom the birth of the nuclear age came as a total and alarming surprise.
