At Newcastle Parsons not only designed giant turbines for the great liners and power stations of the world; he poured out a stream of inventions, and laid the foundations for the gas turbine.

This month sees the first visit to London of the internationally renowned
Cuban National Ballet under their legendary teacher and founder Alicia Alonso. Now over 60, and with failing eyesight, Alonso still dances and closely supervises a huge company of young dancers. Arena filmed them at work in Havana and in the factories and plantations of the surrounding countryside.

Following yesterday's screening of Chariots of Fire Sally Magnusson tells the moving story of one of that film's two heroes - Eric Liddell , the unorthodox but brilliant runner who, having astounded the world with his Olympic gold medal, went off to China to serve God, only to meet an untimely death in a Japanese internment camp. With his widow Mrs Florence Liddell Hall, his sister Mrs Jenny Somerville, fellow athletes, fellow missionaries and fellow internees.

A Fantasy Opera in One Act by Oliver Knussen
Libretto, based on his famous picture book, by MAURICE SENDAK
A young boy, Max, is playing and creating chaos. His mother, exasperated, sends him to bed without any supper. In his bedroom Max conjures up a fantasy world of forest and sea and sails to the land of the Wild Things to rumpus all the night. At last, home-sick, he returns 'through days and nights and even weeks and surely over a year' to his longed-for home.

6: This week Suzi Quatro enters her first clay pigeon competition; Brian Hooper continues with white-water canoeing; and Francis Wilson builds up his strength with weight training. 'Can't they run the film back and show it again?' says suzi QUATRO as she hits two clays with a left and right.
'That's a great start, I just hit the bridge,' says BRIAN HOOPER as he starts his first run on a slalom course. 'I can handle big weights now and I'm sleeping better', says FRANCIS WILSON as he works out on his weight-training schedule.

The temperature in the Crucible will rise a few degrees tonight as ALEX HIGGINS (5) takes the stage for the first time in this year's Championship. NEAL FOULDS has the unenviable task of playing the People's Champion' in his first appearance in Sheffield.
The popular young Canadian, KIRK STEVENS (7), completes his first round match on the other side of snooker's wall. DAVID VINE has all the information and introduces the most important frames.
