5: To Bradford, the Dales and Leeds Novelist and playwright Beryl Bainbridge makes a journey around England and Englishness. She travels to many of the places visited by J. B. Priestley 50 years earlier for his book English Journey.
She is shown around Priestley's old school, where today 97 per cent of the children are Asians, and watches some of the city's Muslims demonstrating to keep boys and girls in separate schools. She also meets Bradford's Chief Executive and learns that his wife signed a legal contract promising to do the housework. In the Dales nothing seems to have changed. Narration

7: This week Brian Hooper enters a white water canoeing competition; Francis Wilson finishes his three months of weight training, and Windsor Davies is still in his dinghy - just. 'Get one good run under your belt then go flat out on the second,' world champion Richard Fox tells Brian.
'Three months ago I sat on this machine and now I'm back to see just how much fitter I am,' says Francis as his fitness is tested again.
'Saved you from a watery grave, says Windsor to a dummy in a 'man overboard' drill.

A Cruel Inheritance
The Reardons' children inherited cystic fibrosis; the Johnsons' child has sickle cell disease. Fate has been doubly cruel to both sets of parents, because not only do they have the burden of sick children, but they know that they caused the disease: each parent carried a faulty gene which they passed on to their child.
New techniques of molecular biology now make it possible to diagnose some inherited diseases during pregnancy. Then the parents have the option of abortion, an option most find very difficult and many unacceptable.
Now it is possible to detect the carrier state of some diseases in parents before conception; then couples must decide whether to have children at all. This film follows the Reardons and the Johnsons through their difficult decisions. Narrator Paul Vaughan
