Novelist and playwright Beryl Bainbridge makes a journey around England and Englishness. She travels to many of the places visited by J. B. Priestley 50 years earlier.
She finds a shop in Gateshead which is a remarkable contrast with those in Newcastle's Eldon Square , and rides the metro to the seaside to meet the pub entertainers who are beating the telly. On the way she calls at Swan Hunters Yard and takes a look at Jarrow. Narration

Behind them lie more than 100 highly competitive frames, ahead lie just 11 more frames that will finally decide who will be the 1984 World Professional Snooker Champion, earning prize money of £44,000.

'I never thought when we started we'd be out here sailing along by ourselves', says Windsor to his wife Lynne as they sail to Llanddwyn Island in North Wales.
'The plane will still be there - it'll be you that's gone', says the parachute instructor as he explains jump procedure to ANNEKA RICE.

RSRE Malvern. The Royal Signals and Radar Establishment was the birthplace of radar and today is carrying out research into new electronic warfare systems for the 1990s and beyond. It is also the centre of an experiment, 'the Malvern link', which could have a decisive effect on the future shape of the nation's science and technology.
