Only four players remain and during the morning the Crucible has been re-set. One single table will now be the centre of attention for the remaining five days of the Championship.
DAVID VINE previews the semi-finals, talks to the semi-finalists and traces their progress over the last fortnight. At 3.0 the first contest begins with seven frames of the best-of-31-frame match. STEVE DAVIS (1) and TONY KNOWLES (4) were seeded to be this afternoon's contestants.

STEVE DAVIS and TONY KNOWLES , RAY REARDON and CLIFF THORBURN should be contesting the semi-finals, but in the cut-throat competitive world of snooker nowadays it will be very surprising if one or more of these illustrious names has not been removed from this role of honour as the final four fight for the frames.

Boycott
In 1962 at Bradford cricket's longest-running saga began. A modest bespectacled youth took guard in his first match for Yorkshire. Twenty-two years and 44,210 runs later a Geoffrey Boycott in contact lenses and with an advancing hairline still plays for Yorkshire-just. For earlier this year it looked as if this controversial cricketer would never again play for his county. The man who had scored more runs than any other for his country, had been sacked. But in an extraordinary winter of discontent at the state of cricket in Yorkshire, grass roots members of the Club swept away the club hierarchy and restored their idol to his plinth. The dramatic putsch highlighted yet again cricket's love-hate relationship with Geoffrey Boy cott -a man once voted in the same poll the most-liked and the least-liked cricketer in the country.
To friends he is a dedicated professional, the embodiment of Yorkshire grit, persecuted and badly mishandled. To his foes he is a selfish, ill-mannered bore, the ruination of younger players in his blinkered pursuit of his own personal record. All eyes will be on Geoffrey Boycott at the start of a cricket season that promises to be one of the most fascinating on record.

Tonight the results of the local government elections and three parliamentary by-elections at Cynon
Valley, Stafford and Surrey South West, will be known.
It will be the first test of national opinion since the General Election last year and since Neil Kinnock became leader of the Labour Party. John Tusa introduces the programme with computer analysis from Peter Snow and psephological interpretation from Professor Ivor Crewe. Sir Robin Day will be talking to leading politicians for their interpretation, and BBC reporters from all around the country will be bringing the latest results.
