The European outdoor clay court season is given the most picturesque start. MATS WILANDER won the singles last year on the famous centre court, which is only a few 100 yards from his and also BJORN BORG 'S homes. The entry this year includes Wilander, the Czech IVAN LENDL , GUILLERMO VILAS and the Frenchman YANNICK NOAH, who last summer won the French Championship in Paris on the same slow courts.

Canada's 'Mr Personality' BILL WERBENIUK (seeded 8) and Manchester's DAVID TAYLOR (10) were on parade this afternoon as their first round matches began. DAVID VINE with highlights.
