This week's theme: The Nude and the Naked
Matisse (1869-1954) "Blue Nude"
at the Museum of Art, Baltimore
This picture, painted in 1907, belongs to a period in Matisse's life when he was the leader of a group of young painters called "Les Fauves" (Wild Beasts). They sought a new style, intuitive, direct and simple. Many people find this picture inept, barbaric and childlike, but there is no denying it has vitality, powerful form, vigorous drawing and intense, vibrant colour.

Geoff Hamilton and Clay Jones visit Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, Dorset, a magnificent collection of azalea, magnolia and rhododendron in a woodland setting.
But such plants only grow well in acid conditions, so for gardens with chalky soil, John Kelly constructs a peat bed, and shows that even the most difficult seeds can be made to germinate.

A Special Deal for Blacks?
The riots in the inner-cities last summer sparked off a continuing argument about the problems of Britain's ethnic minorities and how to remove the disadvantages facing them in housing, jobs and education. Lord Scarman's report argued that these groups should enjoy a ' positive discrimination' in their favour. But would special treatment be fair? And how far should it go, for example, in seeking to guarantee special quotas for the minorities in jobs and universities?
Margaret Jay reports.
