Matisse (1869-1954) "Blue Nude"
at the Museum of Art, Baltimore
This picture, painted in 1907, belongs to a period in Matisse's life when he was the leader of a group of young painters called "Les Fauves" (Wild Beasts). They sought a new style, intuitive, direct and simple. Many people find this picture inept, barbaric and childlike, but there is no denying it has vitality, powerful form, vigorous drawing and intense, vibrant colour.

Lord Scarman's report argued that these groups should enjoy a ' positive discrimination' in their favour. But would special treatment be fair? And how far should it go, for example, in seeking to guarantee special quotas for the minorities in jobs and universities?
