Libretto by IGNAZ SCHNITZER , after the novel Saffi, by MAURUS JOKAI
Johann Strauss the younger - the ' waltz king ' - was nearly 60 when he completed The Gypsy Baron. Full of familiar waltzes and lyrical love songs, it tells a colourful story of gypsy bands, hidden treasure, long-lost wives and secret marriages. In this production Count Carnero, the officious and bumbling Commissioner for Public Morals, acts as narrator, detailing the complex train of events set off when he escorts an exiled young adventurer, Sandor Barinkay , back to his father's estates in Hungary.

featuring motor racing's Formula One World Championship Caesar's Palace Grand Prix from Las Vegas, USA
Desmond Lynam introduces live satellite coverage of the climax to the 1981 season, and the battle for the drivers' championship which has never been closer.
After his dramatic victory in rain-soaked Montreal three weeks ago, JACQUES LAFFITE is now in third place, only five points behind Brazilian NELSON PIQUET who trails leader CARLOS REUTEMANN by just one point. With nine points awarded for victory the French driver must finish first or second to have any chance of the title but realistically, this year's championship looks destined for the Williams or Brabham camp - to win motor racing's greatest prize either Reutemann or Piquet must finish ahead of his rival and in the points in today's race.
