When the circus showman Jimmy Chipperficld and Lord Bath released 50 wild lions into Longleat Park in 1965 the Press branded them as ' madmen '. But the success of Jimmy's safari park idea was born of generations of circus life. Today his daughter Mary is renowned as a trainer-and his son John helped set up 27 safari parks and zoos. They filmed their own exciting record of circus life -and catching elephants and giraffes in the African bush. Reporter Sarah Kennedy

This new production by Harry Kupfer, one of Europe's leading opera producers, caused something of an outcry when it was first staged in Cardiff last month.

The Daily Telegraph complained in a leading article that the work had been used for 'political sport', and that Kupfer had indulged in a piece of Marxist polemic. Tonight viewers can judge for themselves in this special television recording of the controversial production.

The Spaghetti House, Balcombe Street, the Iranian Embassy ... three London incidents in recent years in which police hostage negotiating teams have been in action. But the principles and practices in use in London were pioneered by the New York police, after the killings at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Since that time, Captain Frank Bolz has been in charge of 70 New York cops specially trained to handle hostage situations. He has led his team in 200 seiges without losing a single hostage, negotiator, or even captor.
This documentary film portrays FRANK BOLZ and his men in action in March - statistically New York's busiest month for the seizure, forcible restraint and ransom of hostages.
