When a multi-racial group of nine young people from Bristol got together to make tonight's programme they found they had more in common than the ' media' would have them believe. They used their time to talk (about unemployment, education, street violence ...) and make music with Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger of The Beat. And there's more music from Talisman.

In the run-down areas of our cities, ethnic communities are under economic, racial and political pressure. To resist those pressures the communities are building a culture, a culture of resistance.
This film looks at that culture of resistance as it flourishes in the Bristol district of St Paul's. Through speech, song and dance its inhabitants present a collective self-portrait.

In 1961, at the age of 19, Vladimir Bukovsky was first arrested by the KGB for anti-Soviet activities. For most of the next 13 years he was either in prison, labour camps or ' mental ' institutions. Even while in prison he continued to campaign against Soviet abuse of legal and human rights, with the result that in 1976 he was expelled from the Soviet Union in exchange for a Chilean Communist.
