The Last Great Race on Earth
The 1,200 mile Alaska Dog Sled Race from Anchorage to Nome. Narrator Ian Wooldridge
Two years ago the best dog mushers in Alaska - Indians, Eskimos and white trappers-raced the loneliest trail in the world, ' The Iditarod'. The distance is greater than from London to Rome; temperatures fall to 100 degrees below freezing, gale force winds blow incessantly from the Arctic. The non-stop pressure from other competitors forces a man to drive himself and his dogs day and night to average the 90 miles a day necessary to win this marathon. As the 56 mushers and 800 huskies raced across the desolate frozen wastes of Alaska the big question was: could Rick Swenson become the first man to win The Iditarod twice - and could either of the two women entrants finish the course?

The Raphael Loggia
Narrated by Marius Goring
The last of three programmes
One of the glories of Leningrad's Hermitage Museum is, in fact, a fake. Catherine the Great had a passion for the classical art of Europe. When in Rome, she fell in love with Raphael's designs for a magnificent gallery commissioned by Popes Leo X and Julius II. She had to have just such a gallery herself and so an extraordinary piece of Renaissance Italy was built in the colder climate of St Petersburg.

The story of the Welsh in Patagonia
A documentary film for St David 's s Day with narration by Sir Huw Wheldon
On 28 May 1865, the schooner Mimosa sailed from the Mersey with some 160 Welsh emigrants on board. They were bound for a new life in a distant place, but not in any of the English-speaking countries which were then attracting most of the many migrants from the British Isles. The destination of the Welsh was the uninhabited wilderness of the New Bay in Patagonia.
Why they made such a bizarre choice and what became of them after they had disembarked on that empty shore was the subject of a recent series in Welsh, Plant y Paith. Tonight's film, in English, follows that series.

continues a season of films heralding the 70s. starring Sandy Ratcliff Bill Dean
Janice Baildon is-seemingly-a typical teenage girl, living at home and working in a routine job. But here the ' everyday' qualities cease, since Janice is a schizophrenic, driven beyond breaking point by her insensitive parents and social pressures. Ken Loach 's moving portrait of Janice and her ' family life' is widely regarded as one of the most important socially-based fiction films of the decade.
