A LOTTE REINIGER animation from a fairy tale by WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY
Lotte Reiniger made her first film in 1919. Now 81, the celebrated animator delicately and charmingly reveals the semi-comic virtues and vices of the forces of good and evil in this fairy tale classic, where love is blind and beauty quite definitely in the eye of the beholder.

The villagers of Pura spend 11 hours each day fetching their drinking water, 21 hours gathering firewood, and another 6 hours finding food for their livestock. Pura is typical of the 600,000 villages in which most of India's vast population does its best to survive. Professor Amulya Reddy , disturbed by the failure of science and technology to make any impact on village India, took a team of scientists to Pura five years ago to see if there was any way in which their knowledge and training could help the villagers improve their way of life. Starting from zero, the scientists found they had to ' 'unlearn' many of their attitudes and much of their expertise. Only now are they edging towards solutions for Pura's basic problems of housing, water supply, lighting and most critical of all - cooking fuel. Narrator PETER WILLIAMS
