This week: This Unhappy Breed
When the British ruled in India they brought into being a new race-of mixed British and Indian blood-the Anglo-Indian. They were brought up in British ways to serve British ends. For nearly two centuries they served the British Empire in the Police Force, the Army, the Railways, and Post Offices. They lived in a half world between the British rulers and the Indian subjects. They called England 'home'. When the British departed, a quarter-of-a-million of them were left behind. How do they fare now?

Both Calvin Lockhart who appears with Paul Daneman in tonight's play and Evan Jones the author (writer of the screenplay for Funeral in Berlin, premiered recently) are West Indians. Evan admits taking the title from James Baldwin and the style from Pirandello, who uses ancient theatrical techniques to create character. 'The idea came to me during the most recent Rhodesian crisis. As a writer who is both black and white, I wanted to do something a little more complicated than putting a sticker on my car.'

A musical comedy about a very pretty girl and the two men who loved her, told against the background of many memorable Irving Berlin songs including 'A pretty girl is like a melody', 'White Christmas', 'How deep is the ocean', and of course, 'Blue Skies'.
